A survey released today underscores the importance of social to business, but also reveals the challenges businesses have dealing with the amount and types of data produced by social.
Social media software company and consumer ratings giant Nielsen surveyed employees in medium to large-scale enterprises across North America, the United Kingdom, and Australia, and found that while 88% recognize the importance of social, 60% have trouble taking their data and turning it into something actionable.
A new global study by HootSuite of 750+ enterprise organizations reveals that the majority of businesses believe a social media presence is important to the bottom line, yet they face challenges in turning social data into something actionable.
Here are some key findings from the study:
- 88 percent of respondents agree their organization's social media presence is important to stay competitive.
- 86 percent agree analyzing data about their social media engagement can help their company improve its bottom line, but only 41% agree their company fully capitalizes on the data captured by social media.
- 62 percent say designing a social media strategy is a challenge.

Hootsuite share their social media trends for 2018 in this infographic.
Hootsuite, a platform that lets businesses and individuals monitor and manage social media interactions across some 35 different social networks, is stepping up its game with yet more funding and another acquisition. It has raised a further $60 million, and it is acquiring Zeetl, which creates shortlinks to convert text-based interactions between businesses on customers on social media into more direct voice calls.
Zeetl, which had received an undisclosed amount of funding from Vancouver incubator Growlab Ventures, is also based in Vancouver, like HootSuite. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Both pieces of news come just weeks after HootSuite bought BrightKit, a social campaign planning tool, with news leaking out on the same day that the company had raised another $35 million.
To Hootsuite or not to Hootsuite? I’d like to say this is something I consider before knuckling down on every social media project I undertake, but that just wouldn’t be true.
